Build a CAA application budget before you submit

Check the linked school and CASAA instructions for your application cycle. Requirements can change.

A CAA application budget should include the work required to become ready to apply, not just the fee at checkout. Separate preparation expenses, submission expenses and costs that arise if you receive an interview or offer.

Start with your actual school list. Then label each amount as confirmed, estimated or unknown so a precise-looking total does not hide missing expenses.

Calculate the centralized application fee

The CASAA fee page currently lists $165 for the first program and $55 for each additional program. Some schools charge supplemental fees. Recheck the current cycle before paying. CASAA fees.

For a fictional six-program application plan, the centralized fees would be:

$165 + five additional programs × $55 = $440.

This is not the total cost of applying. It excludes tests, transcripts, school fees, travel and other preparation. Also verify how campuses are represented before assuming each campus creates an additional application charge.

Add preparation costs

List any prerequisite tuition, lab fees, testing, score reports, document requests and shadowing travel you expect. Add only costs relevant to your situation.

For each item, record the amount, source, expected payment date and whether you can change the decision. A course with an approaching refund deadline needs different attention from a speculative interview flight.

Avoid buying several resources for the same problem before identifying what you actually need.

Plan for school-specific expenses

Check each program's supplemental fees and later requirements. Keep deposits separate from application fees and record whether they are credited toward tuition.

Do not count an estimated deposit twice in both a near-term cash budget and a full tuition total without adjusting for any credit. Preserve the school's current terms and deadline.

For interviews, create low, expected and high travel scenarios if the format is not yet known. Use real quotes when available and label placeholders clearly.

Use a simple cash calendar

A useful budget has both totals and timing:

Category Amount status Payment timing
Prerequisite course Confirmed quote Enrollment date
Entrance exam Current published fee Registration
CASAA Calculated from selected programs Submission
School supplement Verified by school Required application step
Interview travel Scenario estimate If invited
Deposit School-specific If offered a seat

A manageable annual total can still create a difficult month if several expenses fall together.

Review fee assistance before submitting

CASAA describes a limited fee-waiver program covering the initial application fee for qualifying applicants. Its current instructions require requesting assistance before submission and impose a submission window after approval. Review the current rules and availability directly. CASAA fee assistance.

Keep tax or financial documents in the official application process rather than uploading them into a general planning tool unnecessarily.

Choose the next expense deliberately

Before adding a school, calculate its incremental preparation, submission and possible travel cost. Compare that with your reasons for applying.

The budget should help you make a feasible plan without treating a larger application spend as proof of a better strategy. Keep an unallocated buffer based on your own circumstances and revisit assumptions when invitations or decisions arrive.

Continue with building a school list and comparing attendance costs.

Put this into your plan.

Keep your next steps with the schools and applications they belong to.
